About Scott Gourson

My joy in counseling is imparting to others that things they do not believe are possible – are possible! And that they can come together in ways one might never expect or have thought to put together on their own.

Our greatest 'weaknesses' can become our greatest strengths. The answers lie within each individual and can emerge within the right atmosphere of a safe and trusting therapeutic alliance.

There are various ways to Recover from substance use issues and other mental health matters. We need to uncover what will work best for you. Generally, this implies one or more of the following: 12 Step Programs; psychotherapy, medication, spirituality/religion; and solutions-focused counseling (tailoring strategies and coping skills that address your specific needs).

Scott has adopted a medical model orientation; that is, if addiction is not in fact a disease – it is like a disease.

  1. People with addictive propensities have a certain 'X' Factor, which makes them respond to substance use differently. It is no one's fault that they possess this 'X' Factor and they are not to blame. However, once identified, it becomes individuals' responsibility to take care of themselves.
  2. The basic question that individuals need to ask themselves is, "Can I use safely?"

Safely implies without negative consequences including but not limited to one or more of the following: loss of control; distress; impairment; legal, medical, occupational, familial, social issues; preoccupation with getting, using, or recovering from the effects of substances; avoidance of obligations; persistent desire to use; unsustained efforts to stop; using despite knowledge of persistent and/or recurrent problems; tolerance and/or withdrawal effects.

Scott employs 12 Step Program philosophies but does not force-feed it. He believes a spiritual component greatly enhances Recovery. Spirituality as it may fall into four areas (Ramson et al, 2005, p. 31):

  1. The deepest level from which a human being operates.
  2. The philosophical context of a person's life including values, rules, attitudes and views.
  3. The same as religion.
  4. A person's relationship with G-d.

Scott blends cognitive behavioral treatment with psychodynamic philosophy and a person-centered approach assisting the individual in actualizing their potentials and finding meaning and fulfillment from life.
